Alderley Edge

Wooded escarpment, towering above the Cheshire Plain with fine views and walks, remains of old copper mines and historic beacon, large car park and toilets.

Bollin Valley

An extensive footpath network has been created from Macclesfield Forest to the Manchester Ship Canal. The portion of the valley within the Borough boundaries includes the Riverside Park between Macclesfield town and Prestbury, the Carrs at Wilmslow, and Twinnies Bridge

Lakemore Country Park

Located in the heart of Cheshire's tranquil countryside. Covering over 36 acres in total with over ten acres divided up into five landscaped lakes and nature trails .

Little Budworth Country Park

Directions: Lies between Tarporley and Sandiway, signposted from the A49, just south of the A54.

Splendid example of lowland heathland which is particularly attractive in late summer. Birch and oak woodland offer good birdwatching throughout the year. Things to do: Way marked trails, nature watching, guided walks, birdwatching. 2km sandy gallop for horse riders link into the surrounding byways. Accessibility: Step free circular route with uneven surface, wheelchair users may need assistance.

Open: All year, car park locked each evening.

 


Macclesfield Forest
Scenic blend of coniferous forest, lakes and moorland with extensive variety of wildlife, including heronry. Toilets and information at Trentbank Resevoir. Tel: 01260 252268.


Marbury Country Park

Between Northwich and Comberbach off A533 or A559, signposted from Junction 10 on the M56.

Open: All year. Car park locked 5.00pm - Winter, 8.00pm - Summer

Attractive parkland, excellent birdwatching on Budworth Mere and woodland walks with a tremendous display of wildflowers in the spring time. Things to do: Bird hide over looking the mere, orienteering course, Fact or Fiction trail, guided walks and events. The new Arboretum Trail is now open, encouraging you to take a leisurely stroll amongst some splendid trees. A childrens' play area is due to open later in the year. Ice cream van during the summer, local facilities in Northwich. Accessibility: Mostly step free, with firm surface and some slopes. Bird hide is accessible. Wheelchair users may need assistance.


Middlewood way

An eleven-mile, traffic-free greenway, nestling at the foot of the Gritstone Peak, running from Macclesfield to Marple. Fine views over the Cheshire Plain to the west. Seasonal cycle-hire - tel: 01625 560050. Reclaimed from a former railway line, the area provides a natural attraction for walkers, cyclists, horse-riders and nature-lovers.


Nelson Pit Visitor Centre

The Nelson Pit Visitor Centre was built on the site of a former colliery with the assistance of a Heritage Lottery Fund grant, and opened in Spring 1999. The Centre provides information and toilet facilities for visitors to the Middlewood Way, the Macclesfield Canal, and the surrounding countryside. There are displays on local history and wildlife topics as well as activities for children.


Poynton Park

this large park adjacent to the A523 is a precious resource on the fringe of a heavily urbanised area. Its pool provides both an important recreational facility and a wildlife habitat.

The Park offers a wide variety of pursuits for all. Trails, bridleways and cycle routes link the Tame Valley to the Etherow/Goyt Valley and the surrounding area. The Vale also has a butterfly park.

Directions: Just off the A537, signposted from Macclesfield.

Open: all year

Wild, upland environment with tremendous views across the Cheshire Plain, ideal base to explore the edge of the Peak National Park. Things to do: Tegg's Nose Trail, Gritstone Trail, orienteering course, climbing & abseiling (must be booked in advance), picnic area, viewpoint car parking, quarry machinery display, attractive clough woodland, birdwatching, sledging fields, indoor picnic and exhibition area. Cafe weekends only from Easter to September Accessibility: Difficult because of nature of terrain, it is very hilly. 2km trail to Langley Viewpoint.
