The only place in the North of England where bittern, marsh harriers and bearded tits all breed. The reserve consists of the largest remaining reed bed in north west England, with shallow meres surrounded by sedge and woodland.  It attracts a wide and varied range of wildlife - from such special birds as breeding bitterns, bearded tits, marsh harriers, water rails and pochards, to otters, roe and red deer.

There are long and short nature trails,  ranging from 1 mile/1.6 km to 3 1/2 miles/5.6 km in length, the shorter once being suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. In the recently refurbished visitor centre are informative displays, a shop and tearoom, all with disabled access. A comprehensive events programme is available throughout the year.

2 miles/3 km north of Carnforth.

The reserve is signposted from the A6 north of Junction 35a of the M6.
